What Is Shopify Plus and When Does Your Business Actually Need It?

If you’re running a successful Shopify store and researching your options for scaling, you’ve almost certainly come across Shopify Plus. At a significantly higher price point than standard Shopify plans, it positions itself as the enterprise tier of the platform. But what does it actually include? And more importantly — does your business actually need it?

Here’s an honest breakdown from developers who have worked on both standard Shopify and Shopify Plus stores.

What Is Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus is Shopify’s enterprise-level offering, designed for high-volume merchants and complex retail operations. Launched in 2014, it gives merchants access to deeper platform customisation, dedicated support, higher API rate limits, and tools designed for large-scale commerce that aren’t available on lower-tier plans.

In 2026, Shopify Plus starts at approximately $2,500 USD per month (billed annually) or is revenue-based for very high-volume stores, scaling with your GMV.

What Shopify Plus Adds Over Standard Shopify

Checkout Extensibility

On standard Shopify plans, the checkout is essentially locked — you can change colours and add your logo, but structural changes are not permitted. Shopify Plus gives you access to Checkout Extensibility (replacing the older checkout.liquid), allowing developers to add custom UI components, custom fields, personalised product recommendations, loyalty points redemption, and advanced logic directly into the checkout flow without redirects or friction.

For brands where checkout conversion is a primary revenue lever, this access alone can justify the Plus price point.

Shopify Flow — Advanced Automation

Shopify Flow is a no-code automation tool available only on Plus. You can build complex multi-step automation workflows: automatically tag high-value customers, trigger email sequences when inventory drops below a threshold, flag orders for fraud review, send internal notifications based on order attributes, and much more. For operations teams managing high order volumes, Flow replaces hours of manual work.

B2B Commerce (Shopify B2B)

Shopify Plus includes built-in B2B functionality — allowing you to create a separate wholesale or trade portal with company accounts, custom pricing catalogues per customer, draft orders, payment terms (net 30, net 60), and buyer-specific product visibility. This is now native to Plus and significantly reduces the need for third-party B2B apps.

Higher API Rate Limits

Standard Shopify plans have API call limits that can become a bottleneck for stores with complex integrations — ERPs, inventory systems, custom apps, or high-volume order processing. Plus gives you 10x the API rate limits of standard plans, which is critical for stores with sophisticated operational setups.

Launchpad — Scheduled Campaigns

Launchpad (Plus-exclusive) allows you to schedule complex campaigns in advance — a flash sale that starts at midnight, automatically changes product prices, unlocks a specific discount code, changes a theme section, and then reverses all of those changes at a scheduled end time. For brands running regular promotions, this is a significant operational improvement.

Dedicated Merchant Success Manager

Plus merchants get a dedicated Merchant Success Manager from Shopify — an account contact who helps with platform strategy, app recommendations, and escalations. The quality of this support is considerably higher than standard Shopify support, which matters when something breaks on a high-revenue store.

What Shopify Plus Does NOT Change

Despite the price point, Shopify Plus doesn’t give you access to the platform’s core database, fundamental URL structure changes, or direct server configuration. You’re still on Shopify’s infrastructure, still subject to Shopify’s platform rules, and still paying Shopify transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments (which isn’t fully available in India as of 2026 — a key consideration for Indian merchants).

When Does Your Business Actually Need Shopify Plus?

  • Your store is processing more than $1 million USD (approximately ₹8–9 crore) in annual revenue
  • You need custom checkout functionality that standard Shopify locks
  • You’re running B2B and D2C operations simultaneously from one platform
  • High-volume API usage is causing rate limit issues with your current integrations
  • You’re running frequent complex campaigns that Launchpad would automate
  • You have an enterprise operations team that would benefit from Flow automations

When You Probably Don’t Need It

If your store is doing under ₹5–6 crore annually and doesn’t have specific checkout customisation, B2B, or automation requirements, standard Shopify plans — particularly the Advanced tier — cover the vast majority of e-commerce needs at a fraction of the cost. The jump to Plus is a meaningful operating expense that should be justified by a specific business requirement, not aspirational brand positioning.

Our Shopify development services cover both standard Shopify and Shopify Plus — and we’ll always give you an honest recommendation about which tier your business actually needs, based on your revenue, operational complexity, and specific requirements. We also work on broader e-commerce development across platforms if Shopify isn’t the right fit.
